Our IT team welcome in a new Era
IT Department Update
As we find ourselves in Sept 2025, the field of information technology (IT) has expanded massively. Our sustainability manager proudly shares that he once was a computer in the days before, what modern kids understand to be a computer. He lived through the evolution of the computer age and its ending with the age of AI, and much of his work has been replaced by artificial intelligence (AI). All industries are now shifting away from relying on electronic computers that once relied on what industry calls human to machine interface ( ie humans programmed and input the information into machines)to now replacing many human roles with AI, marking a new industrial revolution.
At the Hub, our IT team has engaged in extensive discussions about a variety of communications and informational aspects essential to the Hub's operations. For example, our phones and booking systems are crucial for our daily functions. We have become deeply reliant on the digital world. There are many elements that we often overlook, such as our CCTV systems security and fire alarms—these components work tirelessly in the background. Most people don’t consider their origins, installation, or maintenance. However, this doesn't happen by itself; we install the systems, we update them, and maintain them. AI has not yet taken over these responsibilities. Our software, hardware, social media management, journalism, press, networking administration, promotions, and communications are all managed and updated by us. The success of the Hub is greatly attributed to the excellent IT equipment installed by our management team.
While we anticipate that AI may eventually take over some management roles, our IT team is currently focused on making the Hub a smart building. What they truly desire, however, is to work on creative projects such as film production, podcasts, music recording, producing newspapers and books, or perhaps even hosting a radio station. Digital inclusion is an integral part of modern life, whether we embrace it or not. Our sustainability manager, despite being part of the IT team, firmly believes that privacy is power and wishes to isolate himself digitally—especially from certain social media platforms. Yet, he understands that the Hub cannot achieve that just yet.
The work of our IT team is never truly finished. We are exploring the concept of a citizen coin to find a way to reward our volunteers. We need a method to digitally track their volunteer hours and design a reward scheme. While managing this with pen and paper is feasible, developing a digital system with the help of AI would make the process much simpler and more efficient. The idea of having a digital currency that volunteers can cash in for their valuable contributions to the community is still Just a dream -for now!
However, as of September 2025, we celebrate the launch of our inaugural digital newsletter, highlighting the accomplishments of our IT team. Stuart and Kenny take pride in our web page; while nothing is perfect, we believe it looks fantastic. They are also pleased with the installation of EcoSend, which will significantly reduce Claire's administrative workload regarding contact details. We apologize to those who did not receive communications from the Hub prior to Claire managing the contact details in August 2025. Claire’s booking system is now running smoothly, generating bookings, invoices, and receipts without issue. her bookkeeeping also recently got better spreadsheets generated, and the EFTPOS card payment machines and accountancy updated,
We have another blog detailing our incredible WiFi journey, thanks again to Claire, Kenny, and Big Eck. We no longer require the Vodafone free SIM cards, which Kenny sourced for our charity, but we thank Vodafone for their assistance with these free sims during our first ten months of operations.
Additionally, we have sourced and installed computers, phones, laptops, projectors, printers, monitors, cables, connections, and wiring. This effort continues, with ongoing software installations and annual costs associated with ink, stationery, and licensing fees—all thanks to the hard work of our unpaid volunteer-run IT and management team.
If you are reading this, it means Claire has successfully sourced your contact details, adding you to our growing list of contacts. We apologize for the delay in organizing our contact list, as this was outside the scope of our IT department’s responsibilities prior to August 2025.
